Why Are the Residues from A Kitchen Fire Challenging to Remove?

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

A kitchen with a full fire blazing. Let SERVPRO be there for your Bronx fire damage.

SERVPRO Trains in Strategies Specific to Protein-Based Soot Removal for a Successful Outcome in Your Bronx Residence

Residue removal after any residential fire is dependent on an accurate evaluation of the materials that fueled the fire and the characteristics and durability of the surfaces affected. Many fires start in the kitchen and can spread protein-based soot throughout an entire home. The residues created are nearly transparent and are thus hard to see. They carry a particularly noxious smell and can discolor paints, stains, and varnishes if not removed rapidly and entirely.

How Is Protein-Based Soot Created?

The fire damage in your Bronx home varies according to the types of residues produced. A kitchen fire typically begins when foods and cooking oils superheat, or when grease combusts when it boils over, tips, or drips onto a heating element. Residues from this kind of fire present in a mist-like form as the materials evaporate, leaving behind a yellowish film that clings tenaciously to any surface.

What Method Works to Clean Up After a Kitchen Fire?

SERVPRO Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) use their knowledge of industry best practices mastered during the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) courses along with on-the-job experience to remove protein-based fire damage safely and efficiently. We match cleaners to the type of residues, determining which product is most likely to loosen the coating by dissolving or emulsifying. Which type of cleaner and method do we find effective for grease or protein-based residue?

Like dissolves like --

Oily soot responds to an oil-based solvent.

Tight adhesion --

Increasing agitation assists in dislodging the residue through:

  • The use of an abrasive tool like steel wool
  • The addition of an abrasive inert substance to the cleaning product

How Do I Clean Kitchen Fire and Smoke Damage?

4/4/2020 (Permalink)

Fire When fire damage happens, contact SERVPRO of South Bronx at (347) 590-9902 no matter how big or small the problem.

SERVPRO Uses Specialized Cleaners to Restore Your Bronx Apartment

Fire damage in your kitchen can start in the blink of an eye. By the time you have used baking soda, salt, or a kitchen extinguisher to mitigate the damage, you have a tremendous cleanup job on your hands, which can feel overwhelming. However, there is a team that is always available to remove these damages from your home.

If fire and smoke damage in your Bronx apartment's kitchen requires professional cleanup, SERVPRO technicians have the tools and technologies you need to ensure that cleaning is thorough while remaining cost-effective. SERVPRO techs and franchise owners are both highly educated in fire damage as well as its mitigation to help residents in need.

What Appliances Are Most Likely to Cause Fire Damage in My Bronx Apartment?

While stoves pose the most risk, keep an eye out for these appliances as well:

  • Ovens. Toaster ovens, microwaves, and conventional ovens alike can quickly spark fires. Electrical appliances leave particularly hard-to-clean soils from melted cords and burnt electrical components.
  • Dishwashers. This may be a surprising one, but dishwashers' combination of water with electrical components and heating can create a fire risk.
  • Refrigerators. These appliances are the most common non-cooking source of kitchen fires in the US. Worn or damaged relay switches and compressors are the most common ignition sources for refrigeration units.

How Does SERVPRO Get Rid of Smoke Damage and Odors?

SERVPRO fire damage restoration professionals focus on light, loose, and dry soils before moving on to challenging ones. This process minimizes the need to re-clean areas while limiting the use of high-alkaline cleaners and other heavy-duty products. While cleaning solutions for heavy soils are highly effective, they can damage finishes or discolor items in your kitchen if applied too generously to surfaces that do not need them. SERVPRO strives to save your possessions while minimizing repair and replacement costs.

Odor control is accomplished with such tools as:

  • Odor counteractant beads
  • Trays of scented granules placed near air intakes
  • Time-release gel pellets
  • Thermal foggers that dispense solvent-based deodorizers

SERVPRO of South Bronx 24/7 availability ensures that they can be Faster to Any Size Disaster. Call (347) 590-9902 when you need rapid-response mitigation.

Our Experts Discuss Common Issues After A Fire In Your Bronx Home

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Extra Issues Commonly Found With Fire Damage in Bronx Properties

A bathroom received fire damage from too many electric devices plugged into an outlet, and it overheated. Many of the items and building materials in the bathroom required disposal due to charring, however, because the firefighters extinguished the blaze so quickly, there was little damage done to the rest of the home.

SERVPRO technicians put up containment to halt cross-contamination during cleanup of the fire damage in this Bronx bathroom. The vanity and cabinets received a great deal of heat damage and charring, and the techs removed them. The burned sheetrock and insulation also needed careful collection and disposal.

Addressing Water Damage and Mold Prevention
When firefighters use water to extinguish fires, water damage is often the result. The technicians use air movers to dry areas that show signs of excessive moisture and look for signs of mold. With their certification for mold remediation #01295, SERVPRO techs know the early warning signs of an infestation. They can inhibit it before it sets up in the bathroom before rebuilding begins with actions such as the application of an antimicrobial sealant.

Cleaning Smoke Damage
The techs test the smoke residues and wipe down the affected areas removing as much as possible. It is vital to use the correct agents, particularly in the case of wet smoke, and force it to release its grip on surfaces.

Prepping for Reconstruction
To restore the bathroom entirely, the building services division of SERVPRO, general contractor license #2077660-DCA, has the equipment and skills to install new cabinets, hook up plumbing, hang the vanity mirror and set up light fixtures. The restoration services also include painting the walls. Before any of that can happen, the room needs to be odor-free. While cleaning reduces the odors, stronger methods such as thermal fogging and hydroxyl generators that eliminate stubborn scents at the molecular level.

SERVPRO of South Bronx at (347) 590-9902 has the equipment and training to turn around fire damage in local properties and restore the house to its preloss condition, “Like it never even happened.”

Deodorization Basics after Fire Damage in the Bronx

Working with residential customers in the Bronx to eliminate malodors after a fire is a process. No one solution helps in every case because the conditions during and after your fire are unique. Also, we know each person living in the spaces that suffered fire damage perceive odors differently. Responding to concerns about unpleasant smells lingering after we clean up the charring and soot residues is a fluid and dynamic procedure. Our team relies on a combination of deep cleaning and the use of innovative equipment and products to achieve success.

Odor Detection Is Not Objective

Odors resulting from fire damage in your Bronx brownstone or coop are impossible to discern using testing or sampling tools. Our technicians use a range of detection tools to measure moisture content, discover hidden water, and monitor for fungal growth. Similar supports are unavailable when attempting to locate, quantify, and qualify bad smells.

Odor Elimination Follows a Basic Deodorization Protocol

Despite the quirky nature of odors and individual perception, SERVPRO has deodorization success when we follow four basic odor-banishing procedures. The quartet of odor banishers includes:

  • Removal of the odor source and debris
  • Deep cleaning of odor-producing residues
  • Recreation of odor-causing conditions
  • Sealing surfaces persistently emitting odors

Debris Removal and Deep Cleaning

The first attempts at odor elimination trace the same trajectory SERVPRO uses for the fundamental fire damage cleanup process inside your home. Our technicians clear away the burned debris and use research-based cleaning methodologies to dissolve and lift away fire residues. We often add air scrubbing technology during the deep cleaning phase to capture any airborne soot, another efficient way to rid the space of the fire stench.

Innovations to Recreate and Target the Odor-Bearing Particles

If the mechanical methods of cleanup and disposal are inadequate to deodorize the space thoroughly, SERVPRO technicians turn to a range of technological advances. Thermal fogging employs a heated chamber to combust deodorizing components that then “pair” with and neutralize the odor-bearing particles during application. Ozone generators emit unstable oxygen molecules, featuring a third oxygen atom that combines with the odiferous soot bits, destroying the odor through this oxidation process. Hydroxyl generators emit molecules of HO•, deodorizing by breaking down the chemical bonds of the bad-smelling particles.

Sealing as a Strategy

Some porous materials hold tight to odors. Wood framing and trim are examples of structural components that are not easily deodorized and costly and impractical to replace. SERVPRO technicians apply sealing agents to contain the odor inside the structure. Another circumstance where sealing can eliminate persistent odors inside HVAC ductwork. Tight quarters and hard to reach recesses might benefit from a sealing spray application.

Removing odors post-fire damage requires the skills and experience of trained SERVPRO of South Bronx technicians. Call us at (347) 590-9902 for a consultation about our methods and the technology we use to make the malodor “Like it never even happened.”

How SERVPRO Removes Smoke Odors From Bronx Apartments

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

smoke filling area around smoke detector Unfortunately fires happen. SERVPRO of South Bronx has the know-how to remove smoke odors from your apartment. Call us today!

Deodorization Options for Smaller Properties in the Bronx

Apartments are a typical residential property throughout the Bronx borough. As such, our restoration and recovery tactics needed to fit into this smaller area with the same level of efficiency. After a fire occurs, there can be many damaging effects that must get addressed. Yet, often, one of the most challenging lingering concerns is a smoke smell that can infiltrate the entire floor layout, even getting into wall cavities to affect your immediate neighbors.

While we have several choices for effective deodorization after a fire in a Bronx apt, several of these options are most efficient in larger square footages. When it comes to the more concise available space in many apartments in the region, it has become customary for our SERVPRO team to choose more direct routes for neutralizing lingering odors in the unit, such as our thermal and UV foggers.

Thermal foggers play a significant role in reducing harsh and noxious odors following fires in your apartment. Regardless of how the disaster started, there is often a clear origin point where the highest concentration of damage and circulating effects exists. This area is also where odors can be the strongest.

Controlled demolition is a practical first step in notably reducing smoke and other odors after extinguishing a fire. Because partial combustion and charred materials play a vital role in amplifying the overwhelming scents, removing these damaged elements can limit how powerful lingering smoke effects can be. We have a division of qualified general contractors licensed (#2077660-DCA) through the state of New York. Their experience ensures that only overly damaged materials get removed to keep costs as low as possible for our customers.

Eliminating smoke odors falls to the capable equipment we bring to fire loss recoveries like our thermal foggers. These units quickly heat deodorization agents to a vapor fog and disperse it through the immediate space around the device and the technician moving through the apartment. Because of its aerosolized delivery, it can better penetrate softer materials like clothing, upholstery, carpeting, and other damaged areas of your apartment.

Deodorization is a standard need for every apartment after a fire loss. Let our SERVPRO of South Bronx team show you how we can make it “Like it never even happened.” Contact us today at (347) 590-9902.

How To Become Better At Fire Damage Remediation In The Bronx

Caution and Special Equipment Needed During Fire Damage Residue Clean-Up in the South Bronx

One of the ways that South Bronx fire residues differ from ordinary soiling is impossible to understand without looking through a microscope. The visible portion of smoke and the staining seen from soot is made up of tiny bits of incompletely combusted building materials. These minute particles frequently smear and spread if a simple wipe away approach is used, although that technique is often successful with other kinds of dirt.

Soot Is Abrasive, Acidic, and Toxic

The residues left after fire damage in your South Bronx also contain rough, sharp-edged particles. Merely scrubbing them away results in scratching of smooth surfaces because of the fine, gritty materials. Many surfaces coated in soot residues experience tarnishing or corrosion, a chemical change linked to the highly acidic nature of soot. Soot also contains hazardous substances created during combustion, including known carcinogens. Cleanup without personal protective equipment (PPE) exposes workers to potential injury or illness.

Air Quality Suffers Because of Fire Residues

Much of the soot in smoke settles on surfaces, but a percentage remains airborne. While performing fire damage cleanup, additional soot particles are stirred up and join the bits floating. These particles contribute to long-lasting odors issues and impair healthy air quality. To address this challenge, SERVPRO recommends the use of negative pressure air scrubbing equipment in fire damage mitigation and remediation projects. The air scrubbing set up includes plastic barriers to isolate the work area, sealed by the suction action of the equipment. Contaminated air moves through HEPA filters, with significant capture of the small, abrasive particles. The filtered air vents to the outside to prevent further residue deposit.

Research Points Our Technicians to Effective Cleaning Protocols

The hot, high oxygen fire fueled by paper or dry wood leaves a loose, ashy residue. Dry brushing or sponging removes staining from ceilings and walls, and HEPA-filtered vacuums are well-suited to collect and contain that ashy for disposal. Rubber, plastic, and padding or fabrics release sticky, dark soot full of abrasives. SERVPRO uses cleaning products containing wetting agents and surfactants to lift the residues from the surface, suspending the debris to limit its abrasive effect as it is sponged or toweled off the structures.

Protein-Based Residues Require Special Handling

Kitchen fires produce a residue that is an evaporative substance rather than soot--similar to the coatings on frequently used pots and pans. Industry best practices employed by SERVPRO include the careful application of abrasives often accompanied by solvents to dislodge this highly adhesive coating.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training mastered by our SERVPRO of South Bronx employees help us match products, tools, and methods to clear away fire residues appropriately and efficiently. Call (347) 590-9902 to schedule an assessment and planning to resolve challenging fire damage issues.

Getting Rid of Harmful and Odor Causing Particles after Fire Damage in your Bronx Home

8/9/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO wants to always insure your safety as well as the fire damage cleanup in your Bronx property.

Don’t let your Bronx odor damage from a fire keep you and your loved ones at risk.

Combusting materials produce hundreds of carcinogens in the form of thick, black smoke. During a fire, rising temperatures cause air particles to move faster, the increase in air pressure and movement causes a billowing effect that can see smoke splatters on walls, cabinets or fittings. Inhaling carcinogens like monoxide can be fatal; however, once a fire is extinguished, lethal particles return to normal within the first hour or so. You should always get the fire department to carry out a thorough inspection of the property for safety reasons before entering.

There are going to be visible signs of fire damage in your Bronx home as well as invisible ones. Particles in the air that are left behind by smoke or fire can remain for a long time, causing odor problems and hurting your indoor air quality. Since these particles are nearly impossible to measure, and invisible to the naked eye, you need to bring in professional fire restorers and odor control technicians (OCT) to restore your indoor environment to its preloss condition.

Before our arrival, you may want to open windows to provide a natural airflow through the affected area, exchanging particles with cleaner outdoor air. Particles can be released into the indoor environment during the cleanup operation. This process is a normal part of the restoration procedure, but you may notice odors becoming more prominent as upholstery- which can absorb odor particles during the fire and release them afterward- is agitated or foam cleaning.  SERVPRO cleaning procedures are one of the most effective methods of removing odor or particles because they remediate the source of the issue.

Once the property has been thoroughly cleaned, then professional dried many odors are less prominent or gone altogether. To finish the job, SERVPRO can deploy box fans to help promote healthy circulation and bring in fresh out-door air. We can also deploy air filtration devices known as air-scrubbers. These industrial equipment are useful in closed spaces because they remove carcinogens and odor-causing particles through a series of filters. SERVPRO air-scrubbers are equipped with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that can remove particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Restoring your indoor air quality is just as important as removing the visible signs of soot and smoke residues. Contact SERVPRO of South Bronx at (347) 590-9902 for a professional restoration solution.

Call us at (347) 590-9902 as soon as possible after the firefighters release your unit back to your control.

Pack-Out A Plus For Fire Damaged Bronx Brownstone

The chaos and mess after a fire in your Bronx residence are overwhelming. Many tasks need completion before you and your family feel at home again. Moving out furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions might seem daunting. With the help of our experienced pack-out and production facility technicians, the decision to transport items away temporarily can be both time and cost effective.

Fire damage in your Bronx apartment, condo, or townhome is challenging to manage. Water from the efforts to extinguish the blaze is everywhere, and smoke and soot damage makes it hard to distinguish what is worth restoring and what needs discarding. The structural components of your home need the undivided attention of our fire remediation experts. At the same time, the contents also need evaluation, cleaning, drying, and restoration.

SERVPRO uses the Contents Claim Inventory System (CCIS) when we pack up and move items to our production facility. Our crew will list, photograph, or barcode the articles transferred, creating documentation for you and your insurance company. Specially trained technicians at our headquarters assess the condition of the pack-out materials and match recovery techniques and products to the soiled items.

We have a broad range of cleaning and drying resources available for the inventory brought to our facility. SERVPRO uses industrial washing and drying equipment and dry cleaning to manage fabric and soft items. Soot-encrusted surfaces of household goods and decor such as blinds, dishes, knick-knacks, and cooking utensils receive immersion or ultrasonic treatments to dislodge debris and residues from even intricately detailed features. Photos, documents, and books undergo freeze-drying which arrests the damage with sub-zero temperatures under pressure, and then uses lyophilization, a process that skips the liquid state between ice and water vapor, to remove the moisture.

The SERVPRO crew working on the fire damage inside your home has fewer impediments during the cleanup of water and fire damage residues when the contents are gone. After your premises are ready, cleaned, dried, and disinfected, your possessions return to make the restored space a home again.

SERVPRO of South Bronx knows how to achieve and balance the restoration of both your dwelling and your personal property after a fire loss. Call us at (347) 590-9902 as soon as possible after the firefighters release your unit back to your control.

We Work With Your Insurance Company While Restoring Your Bronx Home After A Fire Damage Disaster

5/23/2019 (Permalink)

We have the necessary experience, equipment and expertise to restore your home after a fire. Call us right away so we can get started.

What to Expect When Fire Damage Restoration Professionals Respond in the Bronx

Dealing with the aftermath of a household fire in your brownstone, condo, or townhouse in the Bronx is an intense situation. It is hard to imagine that the soot, water, and debris clogging up the rooms in your home ever will be set to rights. The key is to engage the services of a reputable fire loss remediation company. We have both trained technicians and equipment to get your dwelling back to preloss condition.

Working with your insurance company is critical when we mitigate fire damage in your Bronx apartment. Often your insurance company recommends disaster restoration companies, and we are proud to be among that list of highly-qualified providers. We are a full-spectrum recovery business handling fire, water, mold, cleaning of all kinds, and more. We intend to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.

Because so much water is typically used to extinguish fires SERVPRO takes on water removal and structural drying tasks first. Our service vehicles are stocked with pumps, extractors, air movers, heaters and dehumidifiers to get standing water and residual moisture out fast so that already harmed materials do not disintegrate further and to avoid secondary issues like mold growth.

SERVPRO’s technicians master multiple certifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Our graduates of the Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) course use strategies learned to characterize soot types and match appropriate products and techniques to remove residues from surfaces. Because soot can range from loose ash to a thick, sticky coating, it is crucial to treat it according to the research-based methods developed by the IICRC to avoid smearing or grinding it into a surface. Ashy soot vacuums or dry sponges away, and the thicker, black soot from electrical or smoldering fires needs agitation and cleaners with surfactants and wetting agents.

A third type of soot commonly results from kitchen fires. Protein-based, the deposit is thin but strongly adhesive with a noxious smell. SERVPRO crews employ solvents and abrasive tools to remove it, taking great care not to damage the underlying surfaces.

Be confident that SERVPRO of South Bronx is prepared to respond to your fire crisis. Call us at (347) 590-9902 for fast and professional assistance to return your home to “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Hazards to Watch in Your Home | SERVPRO® of South Bronx

11/8/2018 (Permalink)

In this blog, we’ll be diving into two of the most common household fire hazards. Because no one wants to experience the unfortunate possibility of seeing their home damaged by fire, it’s important to learn and understand how you can protect your home from this harsh reality by understanding fire hazards and knowing how to identify them.

Don’t Fall Asleep When Burning Candles

According to the National Fire Protection Association, during a five-year period from 2011 to 2015, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles. In total, there were 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

When burning a candle, be sure to keep it at least 12 inches from anything that could ignite and put it in a sturdy holder that won’t easily tip over. If oxygen is used in the home, never use a candle—and always be sure all candles are extinguished before leaving a room or going to bed.

Most Home Fire Fatalities Stem From Smoking

Douse all cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand prior to throwing them out, and keep in mind that one out of four fatal victims from smoking-related fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

If you’re a smoker, it is safest to smoke outside, as most deaths result from fires that start in living rooms, family rooms or bedrooms. Fire-safe cigarettes are a great option, and a deep, sturdy ashtray should be used.

While cooking is the leading cause of home fires, smoking is the leading cause of home fire deaths. An estimated 17,200 home structure fires due to smoking materials were reported in 2014, which includes cigarettes, pipes and cigars. Those fires resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage, per the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes.

Lesser-known Fire Hazards

While candles and smoking are two of the most common causes of home structure fires, there are also other lesser-known hazards that could be present in your home.

Did you know that some kinds of glassware in your home could be a fire risk? When sunlight passes through them, the concentrated ray could ignite flammable materials, which is why it’s best to move glass accessories away from windows.

Dust bunnies can also pose a fire risk when collecting near electrical sockets and floor heaters. Sweeping or vacuuming your floors regularly and cleaning hard-to-reach areas like behind the entertainment system can help prevent buildup.

Also, look out for loose outlets in your home. The movement of these electrical outlets could loosen the wires connected to the outlet and create dangerous arcing.

Fire and smoke damage can be devastating to homes, and in many circumstances, can be accompanied by water damage from firefighting efforts. If your home is damaged by fire or smoke, SERVPRO® of South Bronx is here to help restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Easy Fire Safety Planning Tips for Your Family | SERVPRO® of South Bronx

11/7/2018 (Permalink)

Every year in the United States, more than 350,000 house fires occur, adding up to more than $5.5 billion in property damage. Besides the financial loss, these fires cause nearly 3,000 deaths and another 10,000 injuries.

Advance preparation is your best defense against a fire. That’s why it’s important for everyone in your family to be prepared and know how to prevent fires and how to respond if a fire does occur.

You can start by teaching your kids basic fire safety guidelines at an early age. Also take a look at three other fire safety guidelines you can practice together:

Creating a Fire Safety Plan

In the event of a fire, everyone in the family needs to know what to do—including how to escape a burning house and where to go once they’ve safely escaped.

But don’t just create a plan without having practice drills.

Practice makes perfect. Conduct regular practice drills of implementing your plan. Doing so will help you to remain calm and remember your family fire plan if a fire happens.

Fire Hazards to Watch For

Thoroughly inspect your home. You may be surprised at how many fire hazards you spot! Take some time to inspect every room as well as all outdoor spaces to uncover and eliminate these hazards.

  • Are all appliances working properly?
  • Are there frayed or damaged electrical cords?
  • Are your electrical outlets and/or extension cords overloaded?
  • Are you using the proper wattage bulbs in your light fixtures?
  • Are your electrical wires covered up by rugs or carpet?
Cooking Up Fire Safety

One of the biggest house fire hazards is cooking. It is important to be especially careful in the kitchen.

Basic cooking safety is important to follow by anyone who’s cooking:

  • Cooking when tired or otherwise not able to pay attention should be avoided.
  • Always supervise kids and teens while they are cooking.
  • Have a lid close by when cooking on the stove should a grease fire happen. Using the lid to cover the grease fire will help to smother the fire.
  • If your oven catches fire, turn the oven off and keep the oven door closed.
  • Leave the room and close the door if a kitchen fire occurs and begins to spread.

If your family has experienced a fire and needs help restoring your home, SERVPRO® of South Bronx can help! Give us call to learn about our fire restoration services and what we can do for you.

SERVPRO of South Bronx Safety Tips to Follow Before Fire Restoration Help Arrives

7/12/2018 (Permalink)

Learning that you’ve been affected by a home fire is a devastating feeling. While damages from a fire can often be mitigated with restoration, hiring a professional is key to getting your home properly restored.

Working with a restoration company has several benefits—not only will they work with your homeowner’s insurance company on your behalf, but they will also be able to salvage more items in the cleanup. That being said, many people are curious about what they can safely do as they’re waiting for help to arrive.

While anything you’re unsure about should be left to the professionals, a few tasks can be done while you wait so you can get your life back to normal faster. If you decide you’re ready to start on fire restoration ASAP, here are three things you can safely do:

Increased Ventilation

To begin reducing the smoky smell, open windows and doors if weather allows, for as long as possible. While the restoration team will bring industrial-grade equipment to ventilate further, this is a small step you can take toward helping the process along.

Preliminary Cleaning

Non-porous surfaces such as tile and countertops can benefit from a scrub with soap and water to cut through the initial layer of grime. Use a mild dish soap or alkaline cleaner with a towel you won’t mind throwing away. Cleaning improperly can result in more severe and possibly permanent damage to your surfaces, so leave anything you’re unsure about to the pros.

Laundry

Because most things will be washed multiple times, if your washer and dryer have not been affected by the fire, starting laundry right away is a great way to help the cleanup process. Wash clothing, bedding and other machine washable materials with an alkaline cleaner or vinegar solution. However, always leave delicate fabrics, upholstery and curtains to professional care.

If you’ve had damage due to a home fire, SERVPRO®’s team of trained professionals can help your life get back to normal, faster.

SERVPRO Of South Bronx Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very dangerous and can penetrate various spaces within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately evaluate the measures of the damage to develop an specific plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. Therefore, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. SERVPRO of South Bronx will start restoration after testing the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. Base on the information identified during pretesting, we will then determine the type of cleaning procedures is best for the specific fire damage.

Additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is different, each one requires a unique solution for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat you with empathy and treat your home as if its our own.
