The warmer months are upon us! Which means more activities outdoors—things like cookouts, family reunions, seasonal celebrations and so much more.

The downside of that is the warmer months also bring an increase in fire activity.

In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of the year. So, what can you do to help prevent fires?

Below are three main areas that you can pay attention to.

Grilling. Barbecue is a summer staple! With that said, the grill gets a bad rap as being the biggest risk, because, well it is. With a combination of flame, heat, grease and gas, it gives way to danger easily. Before grilling, do a quick little inspection to make sure it’s in good working order with no leaks, placed at least three feet away from anything flammable and is cleaned in between uses. While cleaning in between uses seems to come naturally, improper cleaning is the cause of almost 20% of the reason of grill fires.

Fire pits or fireworks. Warmer nights remind us of sitting by fire pits and fireworks to celebrate holidays! While these things are fun, it’s easy to let safety slip your mind. Never leave kids unattended around a fire pit. Keep a bucket of water close to the pit. Don’t add leaves or pine needles to the fire, and when you’re ready to put it out, do it slowly to keep from scattering embers. Fireworks are the same—keep a fire hose close and water them down before throwing them in the trash.

Chimneys and dryer vents. Most people aren’t using their fireplaces in the warmer months, so it’s the perfect time to have the chimney cleaned or inspected. Dryer vents are another source of fire risk. Be sure to have those vent pipes cleaned out, even if you regularly clean the lint trap.
